It took almost a full year before Vanessa Marcotte’s killer was brought to justice after he raped and killed her before lighting her body on fire on Brooks Station Road in Princeton. Now he’s ditched his free high priced lawyers, just weeks after the tried to get the DNA evidence against him tossed out.

Angelo Colon-Ortiz, charged with the 2016 murder of 27 year old Vanessa Marcotte in Princeton, appeared in Worcester Superior Court today for what was originally scheduled to be an evidentiary hearing on a motion to suppress DNA evidence, but instead, his defense attorneys asked to withdraw from the case.

“Mr. Colon, it is my understanding from the attorneys that there has been a breakdown in the relationship between you and them,” Judge Janet Kenton-Walker said. “And they’re asking that they be allowed to withdraw.”

Through an interpreter, Colon Ortiz said he agreed with his attorneys’ request and asked that another attorney be appointed to him by the court. Kenton-Walker said that an attorney would be assigned by the Committee for Public Counsel Services, the state’s public defender agency that provides legal representation for those unable to afford it. Until today, Colon-Ortiz was represented by attorneys Louis P. Aloise, Edward P. Ryan, Jr. and Michael Wilcox.

Stop right there. This maggot got two breaks already:

  1. He’s so poor, but so heinous enough that he got Ed Ryan and Louis Aloise as attorneys. They are two of the more high profile defense attorneys around, and most people would not be able to afford them. But being broke, unable to speak English, and a raping murderer gets you them for free.
  2. He got Janet “let em walk” Kenton-Walker for a judge.

A defendant could not wish for a better combo than that. Nevertheless he’s ditching them.

A hearing date was set for Feb. 5 with Colon-Ortiz’s new attorney. Kenton-Walker told the defendant that the former defense team will work with the new attorney to provide all information and discovery evidence that’s been provided in the case so far. The new attorney would most likely meet with Colon-Ortiz before that date, the judge said. Outside the hearing room, Aloise reiterated the reasons the defense team asked to resign.

“The client no longer had faith that we would properly and vigorously represent him; he didn’t want to listen to our advice,” he said. “It was clear to me, clear to Mr. Ryan and clear to Mr. Wilcox he wasn’t going to do that and therefore he would have been working against himself.”

Aloise said it was the first time in 42 years as an attorney he had withdrawn from a case due to bad relations with a client. The defense attorneys’ dismissal came after they had filed a motion on Dec. 14, 2018 to suppress DNA evidence that identified Colon-Ortiz has Marcotte’s killer. In that motion, Colon-Ortiz of Worcester, said he did not understand that he could have chosen not to provide State Police with a cheek swab for DNA testing. Colon-Ortiz said he was unable to understand the Spanish spoken by the State Police interpreter and relied on an interpretation by his girlfriend.

Alright, so a lot of people have questions about this because there’s gotta be more to this story. He apparently only speaks some weird dialect of Spanish,  which in a sane world would be his problem, not ours. He also said he agreed to the DNA swab with the state trooper because his girlfriend speaks regular Spanish and didn’t communicate the message right. Yet he delivered packages with names and addresses written in English on them for FedEx. Makes sense.

So why would he ditch his lawyers? Obviously they can’t say, but a disgruntled source from inside District Attorney Joe Early’s office reached out to us and told us the following:

  • Joe Early offered this murdering rapist 45 years in a plea deal, because he was worried he wouldn’t be able to convict if the DNA was thrown out as evidence.
  • Attorneys Ryan and Aloise wanted him to take the deal, but the killer’s cellmates told him to go to trial because they think the DNA will get thrown out by Janet Kenton “let em walk” Walker.
  • Because he thought his free high-priced lawyers were working against him he fired them.
  • People in Early’s office are not happy about this.

Sadly, this doesn’t surprise me in the least. Joe Early has proven to be one of the most corrupt elected officials in Massachusetts history. He was named by the state police as the one who orchestrated the Alli Bibaud coverup in October of 2017 (another story we broke), and even the Telegram and Gazette, which had previously endorsed him, wrote an editorial saying he “must resign.”

Of course he did not because Joe knows what Ted Kennedy and many other Massachusetts politicians before him knew – the people of Massachusetts are some of the dumbest in the country. They are mindless zombies, and if you have a D next to your name, they will vote for you. You can poison school children’s milk and still have an endless supply of idiots waiting to put up yard signs for you. And of course that turned out to be true since he easily won re-election in November over independent reformer Blake Rubin.

The fact that the DA would offer a plea deal to this animal, despite the overwhelming evidence against him, is mind boggling. It shows that Joe Early would much rather take the easy way out and not risk the embarrassment of losing the case at trial.

And despite this GIFT, the killer still fired his lawyers. Now his trial will be delayed even longer as they look to find another high profile, free attorney who will fight to find a loophole to let a murdering rapist back out on the streets. And with Joe Early as the DA, anything is possible.
