Hartford Courant Reporter Who Doesn’t Understand Internet Explains Why He’s Protecting Identity Of Mother Who Blackmailed Son’s Sexual Abuser

Yesterday we published an article about an East Hartford “mother,” who brought a convicted 58 time child rapist into her house, found out he was sexually assaulting her son, and then blackmailed him for $120 rather than going immediately to the police.

What she did was disgusting and vile, and since she’s wanted by law enforcement it was good to get her name out there so that the general public can call the police if they see her. That’s why it was it was confusing when the Hartford Courant decided to take Angel-Marie Carillo’s name out of their article on the story. Note the before and after screenshots.

A turtle rider attempted to inquire why this was from the Courant reporter, Jesse Leavenworth.

The response:

“We decided that identifying her would ID the victim.”

That’s not how the Internet works, my friend. The Internet is forever. You work for a well established newspaper. You distributed her name to your followers and subscribers. You can’t just pretend that didn’t happen. Plus, thanks to Google cache your article still comes up when you search her name.

You can’t undo that. And at the very least you should issue a statement at the top of the article telling people why you edited the article.

Either way, it seems like a cop out. So we’re not going to name and shame child predators because then we might find out who the victim is? In other words, if you want to commit a crime and you don’t want to be dragged through the mud for it, make sure your crime of choice is blackmailing a guy who sexually assaults your child, after you invited him into your house despite a well documented history of sexually abusing children.
